Most engine bay repairs on Jaguar XJ’s will begin with either “Jack up the car and crawl underneath” or “remove the hood and radiator”

According to my hayne’s manual “The overhaul and repair operations are not difficult to carry out but many of them are rather protracted due to the number of components that have to be removed. This is to be expected on such a well constructed, lavishly equipped car”

Basiclly shit’s in the way

Fact. On my former XJ12, doing the alternator involves removing either the AC compressor from the top or the sway bar from the bottom, your choice. Sway bar was my decision.

Been there done that. Twice

I took the AC compressor route though. But that’s just because the AC has never worked in my car anyway.

You can tell that whoever wrote the manual owns a Jag, because that’s classic Jag owner Stockholm Syndrome right there.

It doesn’t get any better with the X308. When I had to replace the thermostat housing, there were four options to get at the rear bolts: 1) Remove the intake manifold. 2) Break the thermostat housing into pieces. 3) Find an 8mm crowfoot (they apparently do not exist outside of large, expensive sets). 4) get a blowtorch and bend a wrench into a shape that will allow it to fit down there.
